1979 Series III Ex-MOD 109 RHD 2.25L petrol 4-speed power brakes hard and soft top. Great project truck, and I think it can be a pretty reliable ride with little investment. I am selling it due to the purchase of a Stage One 109 SW, which suited the family better. Wish I could keep it – it would make a great work horse. Asking $6850. Got it in NC a while back, and I hope to find it a good home! Vehicle is located in Northern Virginia/DC Metro area.

Sorry for the long ad, but I am trying to disclose everything I know. Email me at jpandlp@cox.net for more photos and information. Thanks for looking.

FFR - antenna mast and extra storage behind the front doors I think are the only remaining evidence of FFR

12V system

Pretty sure it has heavy duty springs - it is a very solid ride.

Dished bonnet with spare mount.

New gas tank.

Fairly new rear crossmember replaced at some point (it's not military, and I don't think military crossmembers are available)

WHERE IT NEEDS WORK:

Transmission case has a crack. When full, the transmission is quiet and pretty smooth. I tried some JB on it; it actually slowed the leak substantially. I have a tube of high quality marine aluminum seal that I have not tried yet. Recommend putting the innards in a IIA case, as IIA cases are available, and my understanding is that this conversion has yielded good results.

Leaking brake wheel cylinder on the front right wheel.

Needs a switch for the wipers to park properly.

Frame needs further treatment; based upon my past experience with my 1963 109, it still has life in it. I already treated areas with naval jelly. My recommendation is to treat it further (good cleaning) and apply POR15. There is an area that needs a patch on the inner frame in front of the first rear spring hanger on the left side.

Right rear wheel opening trailing edge has a small fold in it.

Rear shocks will need replacement, and right rear spring might need to be repacked.

Gets some rumble on deceleration from higher speeds (I think 35-50mph).

Slight coolant leakage around the gooseneck.

THE GOOD:

Very good running 2.25; starts right up nice and smooth with a little choke. Need to keep a little choke for smooth running. Operates in normal temp range even on hot days.

Nice tight, positive steering. Tracks straight. Swivels in good shape.

Comes with full length soft top, hoops, horizontal supports, and cab-frame; may need some small hardware pieces.

Comes with rear tailgate that has most of the pioneer mounting kit.

Hard top has a Station Wagon tropical roof and rear door. I have new bolts for mounting the hard top and rear door hinges.

Decent 7.5x16 tires with a good amount of tread; Avon Rangemasters on the front; Goodyear Wrangler ATs on the back.

Super strong front bumper with over riders.

Comes with a tune up kit: plugs already changed, Ducellier distributor cap, rotor, condenser, points, spark plug wires. BTW, the plugs that came out were in excellent condition.

Comes with two oil filter elements.

Comes with a rear license plate light (needs to be mounted).

Comes with a rearview mirror (needs to be mounted).

Three point shoulder seatbelts in the front. Still need to be bolted to body.

The previous owner apparently spray painted the vehicle with a mil-spec looking green color, it looks like the original NATO green/black camo is in good shape underneath. I can tell this, because that spray paint is starting to peel in places. I was planning on gently power washing it to flake away more of the inferior paint and getting it to the original NATO camo.

I think its actually 4 pieces, shaped like a C channel i believe that holds the radiator and intercooler in place and slips into the mounting holts in the bottom and the top rad brackets on top.

Thanks!

I was over on the ROVERS site today and learned that a fellow member Bill Simone passed away from cancer. He was an active Land Rover member in the community, a talented photographer and entrepreneur, and so I googled him to see if I may have come across him at some point at one of the LR events. In doing so, I came across this old article in the New York Times from 2005 - article may be old to some, but was new to me - it covers MAR from that year - and I thought some may enjoy it. Bill is in the sandglow '73 Series III in the small group shot.
I think this was from the same year

Looking at exhaust options; anyone used the stainless set up from RN?

Are there any other options out there worth looking at beyond standard stock?

I'm not sure it's worth it to pay $600 for stainless. Was thinking of buying the standard replacement parts and maybe have them dipped; any foreseeable issues with galvenizing them? Only thing I can think of is the need for a smooth finish for connecting up to the exhaust. Anyone done this?

TIA,
Was looking at Eastwood online and they have the paint, guns, and IR lamps for small stuff.

Anyone used their products or something similar?

I would like the option of powder coating small batches of stuff (heater box, clutch pedal box, etc) as I pull and refit as opposed to making one big trip or multiple smaller trips to the shop for powder coating.

TIA,

I need help identifying a mystery part, reference the attached pictures. This was provided as part of the electrical harness from a 1998 RHD D90 from the UK. This is one small part of a large project I am just finishing up. I have replaced my entire drive line on my 94 NAS D90 3.9 / Lt-77 with a 300 TDI / R380. This included everything from the radiator to drive shafts, the only remaining electrical parts are my rear chassis harness and gage panel (minus the temp gage).
I have resolved many ground and gage issues over the last few weeks and this is the only remaining mystery part. The person whom removed the parts is currently looking for a photo to show its previous location and give a clue to it function but I am eager to get this ID. You see, the harness and major parts were disassembled in the US and shipped to me hence I really don’t have much to go on. I cannot find a picture in any of my manuals and part number / web searches come up blank.

I'm installing the rear bench seat and need to know where to attach the Y Belt. Specifically the location of the hole in the tub. I've seen and know what and how to make the under tub bracket, but I'm unsure of the location of the hole. If someone could measure the distance from the rear cross member or similar that would be great. The attached photo (jacked form Josh) is the general area that i'm talking about.

Was hoping to buy an 80's gray market d-90...either truck type or full top. Thinking of having the hard top on in the winter....than a safety devices roll cage in the summer. Are the hard tops removable? If so, how difficult?

...loaded up and trucking, we're going to do what they say can't be done...

Against my better judgement, taking the 90 from Alexandria VA to upstate NY tomorrow morning (Wednesday) around 0600. For those who followed the initial saga you'll understand :).

Route will be 95N from Virginia, to Jersey Turnpike, to Garden State Parkway, to Route 17 (also in NJ), to the New York State Thruway. I only ask that the board members along this route monitor this thread in the event a daring roadside rescue is necessary.

I'm guessing I only need to: a) make it less than 100 miles from our place in VA, or b) make it within 100 miles of our place in NY...since that's where AAA would take care of the rest.

So it's the 225 miles in between where I'll need the coverage.

A month or so ago the heater in my wifes 97 D-90 stopped working, it worked fine until then (except the low didn't really blow). I stuck my hand in the fan and found a rag caught in the fan.

1. I removed the rag and ran the power directly to the fan motor, the motor started, no problem at all.
2. I checked the fuses that are located in front of the differential shifter and under the hood, all checked out.
3. I ran a ground wire from the wires that plug into the switch to see if the switch wasn't working, nothing happened, no power at the fan power wire.

My question is, what else could I test to locate the problem??? Could it be a relay or something like that??

Thanks!

Alright nother stupid question. I am currently running a detriot locker in the rear and a true track up front. I think I have taken about a 3mpg hit. Anyone else experience the same running mechanical locking diffs (I know it is clutch pack)....

On the flip side anyone notice any difference in mpgs running air/electical actuated lockers?
