Installation of Corbeau GTS II Seats

by Chris von Czoernig

After 100,000 miles, our stock Defender seats had pretty much seen the end of what ever support they originally offered so we decided it was time to replace them. After seeing and sitting in a Corbeau GTS II seat installed in Kevin K.'s Discovery we wanted to get a set of them for the D90.

We ordered the seats and mounting brackets from a local Porsche/BMW speed shop. First off, if you have to order mounts, do yourself a favor, DO NOT order a drivers side mount! Just order two passenger side mounts. The drivers side mount makes the drives seat sit 2" higher than the passenger side. Normally, this might be a good thing since this allows room to get your hand down into the battery compartment however, take into consideration that the Corbeau seat alone lifts you up 2"-3" higher than the stock seat before mounting on the brackets. When all mounted on a drivers side bracket, the steering wheel is so jammed into the top of your legs you were better off in the stock seats not too mention that it's basically a circus acrobatic stunt just getting in and out of the seat. Unfortunately, we didn't know this at the time and ordered a drivers side and passenger side mount. Seat mounts from Corbeau take forever to get in if the shop does not have them already for your truck. We waited almost 2 months for the drivers side mount and 6 months for the passenger side mount to come in. This back order is not just with Rover mounts. When I was picking up the last mount, the guy was telling me that there is a 3 month back order on Toyota mounts. So if you order the mounts, you might have a wait. I had said earlier, if you are ordering them, get 2 passenger side mounts rather than a drivers side but if someone has a drivers side one available there on the spot, you might want to snatch it up if you don't really want to gamble with the wait. There is a way to convert a drivers side mount to match the passenger side mount without loosing strength or safety but the process is detailed, requires cutting, grinding, and redrilling of the seat slide supports.

Other than the problems and time it took with re-fabbing the drivers side mount, the whole installation would have been only about an hour or two worth of time if I had 2 passenger side mounts. Installation simply was undoing the 8 stock seat bolts (4 per side), yank old seats out, attach the Corbeau bases/mounts to the Corbeau seats, put new seats and mounts in place, and rebolt down using the original 8 LR seat mount bolts.

The difference is amazing. You are held comfortably in place when driving around. Your arm can now rest comfortably on the top of the door rather than the slight reaching up feeling and you feel like you have a better commanding view of everything around you. The one drag is that until you run new access wiring for the battery or all out relocate it in the even of the need for a jump start, you will need to undo the 4 mounting bolts and remove the entire seat to access the battery.
